Reflection Prompt: How the artifacts in your pre-competencies verification reflect your technology use as an educator? In light of your learning about TPACK, identify areas of improvement needed.
Description: The past two weeks I have been looking over my NETS-T Pre-Competencies and finding both my areas of strength as well as those areas which could use more focus in light of TPACK. After learning more about the TPACK model, and how to successfully use it during the planning of student objectives/lessons, I discovered that there is one area where I could use more experiences, and also one where I have a firm grasp of the implications it sets forth.
Impact: One area where I excel is:
3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society.
I have always made a point of using technology to convey information to both students and their parents. Through the use of a powerpoint, I was able to teach parents the value of Paired reading with their students, and ultimately able to extend the intervention that my students receive. By utilizing the powerpoint, I was able to effectively communicate the paired reading goals our program had for parents/students, and give them a tool/strategy to use with students that produced great results.
One area which could use improvement would be:
4. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility
Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices.
The idea of promoting safe and legal use of resources is not something that I have stressed very much with students. I have used technology tools and resources as much as possible with my students, but ultimately have never formally addressed copyrights or ethical uses of materials unless we were doing a research unit. This is something that (after looking at my NETS-T) I feel needs to be an ongoing conversation/lesson with students, and I have not done so up to this point. Another aspect that could be improved would be to acquire tools that would allow my students to collaborate with classrooms around the world. At this point, I have not done this (due to lack of resources), but it is something that I feel could be very beneficial to students.
In relation to the TPACK model, I feel that I am conscious of all aspects (pedagogy, content knowledge, and technology) when I am planning lessons for students. I would like to have an opportunity to explore more advanced examples of the NETS-T standards as I continue to grow as a technology leader in my classroom and building, and will accomplish this by continuing to explore new technologies and testing their impact on students and learning goals.
Intent:
I believe that I successfully integrate technology with my students. The area where I feel that I could use more focus and experience is promoting and modeling digital citizenship. Now that I have recognized this area, I will start focusing my technology integration in this direction, providing my students with even more successful experiences with the use of our classroom tools, and showing them the proper/legal uses of resources. My larger goal would be to have the tools necessary to connect to another classroom, and plan a unit of instruction that would allow my students to work with others from another culture. Ultimately, this may not happen as soon as I would like it too, but it is definitely a learning environment/experience that I want to provide my students with and something that would benefit the whole school in the long run.
